We Need bail reform.
Individuals charged with misdemeanor offenses are only awarded pretrial release when they can afford to pay bail. But for many of those living in poverty, paying bail is not an option. The continued reliance on a cash bail system has created a two-tiered system of justice: at one level are individuals that have the means to purchase their freedom and avoid jail time while they wait for their day in court, and, at a level below that, are individuals that will remain incarcerated because they are too poor to afford to return to their lives while they await their day in court. Ending cash bail strengthens our community financially, socially, and emotionally this tears up our communities.
- Avoids meaningless jail time for innocent citizen
- Creates a bail system based on citizen merit not socioeconomic status
